The History of Bravos

A property shaped by generations

A family account traces Bravos back more than three centuries, from seventeenth-century rural Galicia through its development as a traditional casa grande.

Origins in the seventeenth century

The recorded family history of Bravos can be traced to at least the late seventeenth century.

The Rodríguez ancestors initially occupied the land under traditional Galician forms of tenure. By the end of the seventeenth century or beginning of the eighteenth, the family account records that they had purchased the house and associated lands outright.

At that time the property comprised a principal house, a smaller dwelling and agricultural outbuildings, with cultivated and wooded land extending to approximately 20 hectares.

Growth and consolidation

Over successive generations the family acquired further land and rights over neighbouring properties. The estate developed into what rural Galicia traditionally knew as a casa grande: a substantial family house at the centre of a significant landed agricultural property.

The most important period of expansion began in the early twentieth century, when adjoining land towards the river and mills was progressively consolidated into the estate.

Buildings for a changing estate

Surviving plans record an ambitious programme of improvements undertaken towards the end of the owner's grandfather's life.

The family account identifies the construction of the stable between the large and small houses, together with the hen house, pigsties, bakehouse and storage building opposite the house. By around 1954, the historic estate had grown to more than 40 hectares.

The reference to more than 40 hectares describes the historic estate at that time. The property now being presented is approximately 18 hectares.

The Chapel

The chapel forms an important part of the historic setting of Bravos.
